Traffic volume monitoring
An important component of any integrated system of traffic management at a city level is the sub-system of quantifying the number of vehicles transiting certain areas or circulating on the city’s arteries.
Trying to avoid inconvenience caused by the use of inductive loops, an innovative solution was implemented to quantify the volume of traffic at the level of an important intersection in Alba Iulia ( Bd. Revolution 1989 with Closca Str.), which uses LoRaWAN technology.
On each lane of traffic were installed in holes in the asphalt IoT sensors specialized in vehicle detection, thus significantly reducing the installation time compaired to the inductive loop solution. Also, the solution for the restoration of the road surface was an innovative one, using composite materials that allow the resumption of circulation within minutes of installation.
Considering the depth of installation of 20-40 cm and the lifetime of the sensors for 5 years, this mounting solution ensures the system’s independence from periodical restoration of the wear layer (inductive loops are installed at a depth of 2-4 cm, being destroyed in a scraping to remake the asphalt layer of wear).
Currently, the viewing interface provides information about the total volume of traffic during one day. With the next version, which will be available starting in mid-July 2018, the solution will provide, in real time, detailed information for each driving sense (even at the level of the traffic lane, thus allowing the municipality to be able to take decisions to optimize road traffic in the intersection/area concerned on the basis of actual field values.
